Attention! The new national standard GB/T 28164.2-2025 for lithium batteries will be implemented on May 1, 2026

GB/T 28164.2-2025 "Safety Requirements for Portable Sealed Batteries and Batteries Containing Alkaline or Other Non-acidic Electrolytes Part 2: Lithium Series" will be implemented on May 1, 2026. This standard will replace the lithium battery in GB/T28164—2011 "Safety Requirements for Portable Sealed Batteries and Batteries Containing Alkaline or Other Non-acidic Electrolytes".

Compared with GB/T28164—2011, the main technical changes of the new national standard are as follows:

A) The definitions of injury, expected use, battery pack, leakage, rupture and rated capacity have been changed;

B) Terms and definitions of lithium-ion polymer battery, reference test current, charging upper limit voltage, maximum charging current, coin battery/button battery/coin battery pack, cylindrical battery, square battery, battery block/parallel connection, functional safety and discharge termination voltage/final voltage have been added;

C) The parameter measurement tolerance has been changed;

D) The general requirements, insulation and wiring, air leakage, temperature/voltage/current management, terminal contacts, battery assembly and quality plan were changed, and battery safety components were added;

E) The type test and sample quantity have been changed:

F) Changing the charging procedure for testing, expected use and reasonably foreseeable misuse, and adjusting vibration and mechanical shock to mechanical testing;

G) added design evaluation-forced internal short circuit (battery);

H) The temperature cycle and low air pressure have been deleted;

I) safety information, identification, packaging and transportation have been changed;

J) The range of charge and discharge for the safe use of lithium-ion batteries and the measurement of AC internal resistance of button batteries are increased;

K) The new standard is incorporated into IEC62133-2:2017/AMD1:2021. The main technical modifications include:

◆ In 7.1.2, "stabilize for 1h and 4h respectively" is changed to "stabilize for 1h to 4h";

◆ In 7.3.5 b), delete "at the upper charging temperature";

◆ 7.3.6 a) Delete "Charging for more than the time specified by the manufacturer shall not cause fire or explosion";

◆ Changed the battery test environment temperature in Table 5.
